Here's an example of WWII humor as selected by Editor Gordon: "Overheard in the Ship's Service [the station's restaurant]: 'Give me an order of shoestring potatoes. I'll just lace up this so-called steak, wear it, and give the shoe stamp to my wife.' "
Many of those parcels in the Post Office photo at the top cost less to mail in 1943 than a letter does in 2011.
