As the Seattle World's Fair Grounds Become The Seattle Center

Monorail

The world's first high-speed commercial monorail has passed its hardest tests with flying colors. Recently turned over to the city by the Fair's liquidating committee, it will be operated by Alweg, Inc., until October 1, 1963.

Alweg, the Swedish firm that built the 1.2- mile monorail line, is building a similar transportation system in Tokyo, and using Seattle's system as a prototype of mass transportation of the future.

More than 7,000,000 persons rode the monorail during the Fair and despite handicaps of inclement weather and fewer tourist attractions on the Center grounds during the winter, another quarter-million riders have taken the 96-second trip since the Fair closed.

Daily operating hours are from 11 a.m. until 11 p.m. Fares are 75¢ round trip, 50¢ one way for adults, 50¢ and 35¢ for children. During the summer, schedules and hours will be adjusted as the need arises, Convention passes and discounts are also available.

The two trains have a capacity of 124 for each car and a maximum carrying capacity of 450 each. Total train length is 122 feet.
