As the Seattle World's Fair Grounds Become The Seattle Center
Landmark and new symbol of Seattle, the 607.88-foot Space Needle makes Century 21 Center easy to find from any part of the metropolitan Seattle area.
More than 3,000,000 persons visited the Needle during its first year of operation, either dining in the sumptious Space Needle restaurant or enjoying the view from the observation deck just above.
The Needle stands on three pairs of long, slim legs, tapering to a waist at the 373-foot level. The legs flare out again above the waist to the 500-foot level, where the revolving (once per hour) restaurant is located.
The top 50 feet of the tower is a tripod of tubular stainless steel spouting a beacon of flame fed by natural gas.
Visitors are whisked to the top in windowed elevators at 800-foot-per-minute speeds, 43 seconds from bottom to top. Two 832-step stairways are also included in the coar [sic] for emergencies.
Needle hours are 10 a.m. to midnight, with the restaurant open from 11:30 a.m. until legal closing, and 9 a.m. to midnight on Sunday. Restaurant patrons are also charged the $1.00 elevator fee.
