As the Seattle World's Fair Grounds Become The Seattle Center
Scheduled for completion in spring, 1964, the converted Century 21 Coliseum will give Seattle and the Northwest a gigantic multi-purpose sports-convention arena.
Seating capacities upwards of 18,000 make the Coliseum suitable for big-league hockey, major political conventions and many other events.
During the Fair, the Coliseum housed the Washington state exhibit, and this past winter, after the exhibit was removed, was sold by the state to the city of Seattle in a prearranged transaction.
Designed by architect Paul Thiry, the Coliseum is 400 feet square, with 129,000 square feet of unobstructed space inside the roof area.
The sweeping roof is supported by steel compression trusses, springing from sculptured tripodal concrete abutments located at the middle of each of four sides of the building and intersecting 110 feet above the floor at the center point.
The building contains a total of 8,300 cubic yards of concrete, 5.6 miles (29,700 feet) of steel cable and 115,600 square feet of insulated anodized aluminum panels in the roof.
