As the Seattle World's Fair Grounds Become The Seattle Center
Music, as always, plays a major role in Center activity.
Summer park concerts, a Seattle Sunday favorite for many years, will be a portion of the weekend schedule at the Century 21 Center grounds.
Beginning June 2, Gustave Stern will conduct at least nine free Sunday afternoon concerts in the Center. Entitled "The Sound of Music," the programs will have a wide variety of selections.
Each program will be built around a special theme. In addition, guest soloists will appear from time to time with the 30-member summer symphony orchestra.
The concerts are co-sponsored by the Center, Greater Seattle, Inc., the Seattle Park Department and the music performance trust fund of the Musicians' Union of Seattle.
The Scandanavian music festival, staged in 1962 at Volunteer Park, will be held in the Center during the August 2-11 Seafair program.
Also during Seafair, visiting high school bands from throughout the West will perform in the Center in daily noontime concerts.
At night, the popular Seafair street dances will be held near the International Fountain.
In daily programs, such organizations as the Ladies' Musical Club, Philomel singers, Mother singers, Swedish Women's Chorus, Poe Songcrafters, S.P.E.B.S.Q.S.A., Sweet Adelines, Inc., Inter-Racial Harmonics and Madrigal Society will perform.
